Cleveland Park Trees

Cherry trees on Ordway

Trees and green space have attracted residents to Cleveland Park since the founding of the neighborhood in the 19th Century. Every tree on Earth provides shade, keeps soil moist, provides habitat for birds, and reduces global warming. Locally, trees in Cleveland Park make the neighborhood a cool and pleasant to live.

Tree Care

Contribute to our neighborhood by caring for the street tree in front of your house. Download a tree care sheet with details of watering and caring for street trees. For your safety and the health of the trees, only the DC Urban Forestry Administration is authorized to prune street trees.

Residents can also download the DC Urban Forestry Administration's report titled "State of the Urban Forest, Cleveland Park"

Tree Planting

The District of Columbia in 2006 nearly completed tree planting along all Cleveland Park streets without trees. The Cleveland Park Historical Society has also contributed by organizing neighborhood tree plantings, Voices, Spring 2005. In April 2005, CPHS, with funding from DC Greenworks, planted seven cherry trees and a set of rose bushes in the triangle at Ordway and 36th Streets NW. In May 2005, CPHS, with funding from the Casey Trees Endowment Fund, planted seven Nuttall Oaks and three cherry trees along Lowell and Macomb Streets NW. If you need a tree along the street in front of your house contact the DC Urban Forestry Administration or the chair of the CPHS tree committee (see below).

Tree Removal

The District of Columbia passed a law in 2003, the Urban Forest Preservation Act, that protects our most significant trees by requiring developers to plant trees if they propose to remove from public or private land any tree with a circumference of 1.4 meters (55 inches) or greater. Contact the DC Urban Forestry Administration if you wish to remove a large tree.
