The History of ROMP:

Renovations of Macomb Playground (ROMP) was created in the early 1990's as neighbors of Macomb Recreational Center visualized a renovated playground with modern play equipment.  The playground had not been altered in several generations; thus, the Cleveland Park Historical Society supported the work of the neighbors and adopted ROMP as a subcommittee of the organization in 1996.  Improvements were made in 1998 and 1999 through the fundraising and community building efforts of a wide variety of volunteers from the John Eaton School, CPHS, and the neighborhood at-large.

ROMPs Mission:

ROMP serves as the 'Friends of Macomb Park' community group.  The imminent goal of ROMP is to establish a permanent 'Friends of Macomb Park' community group that will ensure continued maintenance and improvements of the sole public park in Cleveland Park.  As such, this park serves as an important resource for the entire neighborhood.  The park consists of playgrounds, baseball field, basketball courts, and a field house.

Board Members:

Current ROMP Board Members include: Sabra Klein Maloney (President), Sareena Jerath, Jeff Davis, Sharon Davis, Colleen Fisher, Drew Maloney, and Laine Shakerdge.

Board meetings will be held monthly at the Macomb Park Recreation Center and will open to the public (please monitor website for dates).  For information, contact ROMP@clevelandparkhistoricalsociety.org.

Partnership with DPR:

In 2006, ROMP entered a formal partnership with the DC Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) to continue renovations of Macomb Playground.  In FY 2008, DPR is scheduled to resurface the basketball courts and install a spray park in the lower playground area.  Through a fundraising campaign scheduled to begin in Winter 2007, ROMP will raise money for the purchase of new playground equipment and replacement of damaged equipment as well as the purchase of computers and an air conditioning unit for the field house.  Long-term renovations to the playground will likely include renovating the field house.
