Cleveland Park is one of many DC communities that participated in the ART ON CALL citywide effort led by Cultural Tourism DC, the District Department of Transportation, and the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities to restore Washington’s abandoned police and fire call boxes as neighborhood public art. These call boxes were installed from the 1860s through the early 1900s. Despite becoming obsolete with the introduction of the 911 emergency call system in the 1970s, they were never removed.
Fortunately Cleveland Park neighbors joined the Art on Call effort to restore our 15 call boxes with original artwork and narratives that call attention to our neighborhood's history and architecture.
The Cleveland Park Historical Society (CPHS) is the organizational sponsor of the Cleveland Park Restoration Call Box Project.
Artists whose works appear in the call boxes have generously contributed to this project.
The Cleveland Park Restoration Call Box Project also has been generously supported by local organizations, businesses, and residents. Local organizations include Councilmember Mary M. Cheh, Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3-C, and the Cleveland Park Citizens Association.
